Wrinkled Fingertips: What Causes Them to Wrinkle and Ways to Avoid It
Are you asking yourself why your fingers get wrinkled after soaking them into the water? Or are you one of those who get pruney fingers even if they have not been exposed to water?
In the article bellow there are two main reasons described for causes of wrinkled fingertips during the longer period of immersing of hands into the water and other reasons, which may contribute to appearance of permanent wrinkles and dryness of your hands. We will also present you some simple ideas that you can use it to treat or to avoid undesired lines and wrinkles on your hands and fingertips.
Factors, which are making fingertips wrinkled after prolonged exposure to water
Absorption of water in the fingers
Your hands are protected against absorption of water into the skin cells with protective oil called sebum. If you soak in the water long enough sebum may be washed away from the surface and water can be absorbed into the skin cells. Thick skin in your fingers tends to absorb water even more and you get wrinkled fingertips. To be more precise, the keratin, which is the key structural material making up the outer layer of the skin, absorbs water into the skin cells. Where surface of the skin is thicker there is higher concentration of keratin contained and that’s why the area on your fingers absorbs more water than the rest of your body.
Constriction of blood vessels
Skin’s blood vessels constrict as a result of nerves firing off after a prolonged exposure to water. As they constrict, skin parts that lie above those vessels will be pulled down by it and create wrinkled fingertips.
Other factors which inhibit protective oil coating
Sometimes fingers get wrinkly even if you haven’t been exposed to water. Some factors may inhibit sebum production and that is reason for occurrence of wrinkles. Reduced secretion of protective oil (sebum) may occur because of;
- Excessive usage of soaps
- Over washing of your hands
- Shortage of essential fats in your nutrition
- Cold weather which dries your skin out
- Excessive usage of chemicals with which you are in touch during cleaning
- Applying of beauty products
- Exposure to many environmental toxins
- Hormonal imbalances
- Stress
- Hard physical work
- A genetic tendency for dry skin
- Ageing of your skin
